About Department

(DBT Star CollegeStrengthening Scheme awarded department)

The Departmentof Chemistry of Mugberia GangadharMahavidyalaya was started in July 1997. It is one of the well-equipped ScienceDepartments of the college with a laboratory for research facility.

Visionof the department is to provideproper infrastructure for a better transfer of knowledge to the students usingancient ideologies and modern techniques so as to make them capable enough tofind a meaningful path of survival with dignity, confidence, discipline, senseof innovation and responsibility towards the society and environment.

Currentlythere are 6 faculties in our department

Dr.Bidhan Chandra Samanta (Associate professor and HOD)

Dr.Narottam Sutradhar (Assistant Professor)

Prof.Goutam Kumar Jana (SACT)

Prof.Minakshi Maity (SACT)

Prof.Ribhu Maity (SACT)

Prof. Mrigendu Midya(SACT)

List of Non-Teaching staff

Soumen Mandal (LAB Assistant)

Soumyadev Sarangi (LAB Assistant)

Infrastructure

We have one largetheory classroom named Maharshi Kanad Lecture Hall (equipped with a greenboard, smart board and a projector) and 2 theory cum practical classrooms namedas Niels Bohr Lab and C V Raman Lab (equipped with a green board, smart boardand projector). One departmental staff room named as Dalton House and one A P CRay research laboratory equipped with few useful analytical tools like UV-Vis,IR and fluorescence spectrophotometers along with other useful equipment'snecessary for research. There is a separate departmental library for ourstudents and a store room.

Teaching

Teachingis being provided by adopting innovative teaching learning methods and aids. The primary objectives of the department are to strengthen the academic andphysical infrastructure by providing sufficient lab facilities, properguidance, inspiring and motivating teaching and learning techniques. Proper labfacilities will increase students’ potential and opportunity regardingbench-skill, innovative thinking, and conduct project work by more and morehands on exposure. This kind of stimulating educational environment willmotivate students where they will learn and understand the basics of thesubject and become aware of fields of utilization of the earned knowledge. Thekey factor for effective learning is to study good and different books. So thedepartment aims to enrich the departmental library with sufficient number ofstandard books and journals which will increase source of knowledge for boththe students and the teachers.

Beside usual theory classes students aregiven remedial class and coaching for exams like IIT, JAM etc. so that they cando masters from NIT's, IIT's and other reputed institutions. Besides carriercounselling is also arranged for our students that helps them to find andchoose their desired path after the completion of course.

Research

Departmenthas a small research lab with FT-IR spectrophotometer, Spectrofluorophotometer, PC Based double beam spectrophotometer, Magnetic Stirrer, Hotair oven, Digital Viscometer, Tensiometer, Centrifuge, Sonicator, RotatoryEvaporator, Reaction Hood etc. Exposure to research laboratories will stimulateresearch mind of the students. So the department aims to develop more researchfacilities in the department by procuring various research instruments of thecurrent research interest.

Thefaculty members of the department have completed three UGC sponsored minorresearch projects and running one R & D project funded by WBDSTBT. Now itis aimed to run more research projects in the fields of synthesis, biologicaland photo catalytic activities of transition metal complexes, materialsynthesis, catalysis, environmental remediation etc. and aimed to guide regularresearch scholars under these projects.

Thedepartment also likes to develop a well-equipped research scholar room with tencomputers and internet facility. More collaboration with different reputedinstitutions like IIT, IISER, IIEST, ISI, NIT for quality research purpose willbe initiated in the next 5 years.

Thrust Areas of Research work being executed in the department

1.       Development of modified epoxy compositereinforced with natural fibers for their applications in electrical insulation, fiber glass door, window frames, bath tubs and sanitary purposes along withautomotive, aerospace, mining, building construction and other industrialapplications.

2.       Synthesis, biological and photo catalyticactivities of Schiff base transition metal complexes along with DNA binding andprotein interaction studies.

3.       Synthesis of nano-structured metaloxides, sulphides, metal nano-particles, nano-composites for application incatalysis, bioactivity and environmental remediation.

Research problems

Todevelop new, cost effective, environment friendly processes for preparingthermally stable, moisture resistive epoxy composites with high tensilestrength and flexibility.

Tosynthesize metal complexes of enhanced bio and photo catalytic activities.

Todevelop environment friendly protocols for synthesis of nano particles (oxides, sulphides etc.), nano composites with enhanced physicochemical properties forapplication in catalysis, bio catalysis, environmental remediation etc.

DepartmentalAchievements

Thedepartment has been awarded with DBT-STAR-COLLEGE-STRENGTHENING-SCHEME inthe year 2020 under which our students are facilitated with several usefulhands on experiments beyond course syllabus, involved in research work, participated in educational tours that enhance their knowledge and hands onskill which help them to get job of chemist in Govt. and private sector.
