DepartmentProfile

The Department of Mathematics startedits journey  in 1998 as aGeneral Subjectand in 2004 as a B.Sc in Mathematics Honors. Also the deptstarted PG Programmein Mathematics since 2017. Since it has been striving forexcellence. Duringthis short span, the department has made a mark in the areasof both teachingand research. Several subjects of current importance likedifferentialcalculus, numerical analysis, algebra, computer programming, fuzzymathematics,computational fluid dynamics etc. are part of its curriculum. Atpresent twofull time teachers, five SEC teachers, three contractual teachersare sincerelyengaged in teaching and research.

At the same time, the students ofthis department have been doing well innational and state-level tests like JAM,NET, GATE, SET, CAT, etc. Furthermore,it is the department that initially took initiative in creating computerawareness in this region by organizing workshops and orientation courses oncomputer programming for school and college teachers & Students both.

Goalsand Objectives of the Department

 As Mugberia Gangadhar Mahavidyalaya wasestablishedfor the advancement of knowledge along with the development of theregion interms of human resources, academic environment, etc., the goals andobjectivesof the department of Mathematics are :

 To develop human resources forteaching mathematicsin schools, colleges etc.

To advance the knowledge ofmathematics by organizing seminar/workshop inemerging areas of mathematics.

To improve the capacity building ofthe students like soft skill,language skill, life skill, ICT based computingskill, the department publishedwall magazine and organized seminar for Ramanujanmemorial lecture series,International Mathematics day observation, Quizcompetition, Hand on workshopfor Student PPT preparation & presentation,model competition, postercompetition, workshop on meditation and mindfulness,Hand on practice of MATLAB,C-programming on Computer Lab, etc.   

To develop skills of students, thedepartment use ICT based teachinglearning process and arrange skilldevelopment certificate courses like MATLAB,LATEX, C-Programming in everyacademic year.

To develop research skills ofstudents, the department arranges a shortterm certificate course on ResearchMethodology and implements field visit &Project work in curriculum for PGstudent only.

To motivate the students for JAM, NET,GATE, SLET, CAT etc examinations,the department frequently arranged workshopon NET/GATE/JAM etc in everyacademic year and allotted class in the semesterroutine.

To reduce the dropout rate andincrease the self confidence of thestudent, the department has a mentor menteeclub and the club conduct meeting atleast two times in every semester.

To make good relationship amongparents, mentor and mentees, thedepartment arranged parent mentor meeting inevery academic year.  

To create an awareness formathematics and its applications amongst thestudents and people in general.

To make a good relationship withneighborhood community and holisticdevelopment of the student, the departmentarranged various extension/communityworks in the neighborhood community. 

To create aptitude for takingmathematics as career.

Curriculum

The Mathematics is in fact aninterdisciplinary subject. Keeping this inmind, we included variousinterdisciplinary subjects in our curriculum in 1998.Later on, in order tocope with the changing world of modern science andtechnology and to fulfillthe needs of the society and country, in 2007, 2013and 2017 the curriculum wasreviewed and revised by affiliated University. Nowthe department is runningwith latest affiliated University CBCS pattern in UG& PG level.

Teaching,Learning and Evaluation

 Students are taught theoreticallythrough usual classroom teachingtechnique in which audio-visual systems likeLCD etc., are used. Moreover,tutorial classes are arranged on regular basisfor the students. Seminars, quizand group discussions by the students are alsoorganized for their improvement.Special attention is paid to the students fromweaker sections. Visits to IISER,Visva-Bharati University, CSC Industryat  Haldia, Digha ScienceCenter at Dighaare arranged for experiential learning of the students. Forpractical classes, moderndepartmental computer laboratory with internetconnection are being used.Special lectures delivered by renowned mathematiciansare also arranged atregular intervals.

For effective learning, recentlypublished books are purchased regularlyfrom DBT grants received for thispurpose. The internet facilities of thecollege are availed by the teachers& students to update their knowledge.National / Internationalseminars/conference/workshops are also organized by thedepartment to discussabout current research and to exchange the ideas. Besidesthis, faculty membersof this department participate/attend regularly thenational and internationalseminars/symposiums/workshops etc. in country.

Students are evaluated through semesterexamination system. The wholecourse is equally divided into six semesters forUG and four semesters in PGlevels.  Inevery semester, two internal examinations and one end semesterexamination areconducted to evaluate the students and feedback on curriculum isalso collectedfrom them.   After completion of allsemester, thestudent receives their final result.

Research,Consultancy and Extension

Despite several constraints,including lack of sufficient books andjournals in the library, the researchperformance of the department is highlyencouraging. At the moment a majorresearch project under WBDST is ongoing andresearch is under way in InventoryControl in Crisp and Fuzzy Environments, SoftComputing Methods and theirApplications in Inventory and Production Systems,Fuzzy and Rough Mathematics, andMulti-Objective Transportation Problems. .

The department has published manyresearch paper in SCI/Scopus/ICT indexjournals and many books.

StudentSupport and Progression

 In addition to the usual class roomteaching and practical classes,special attention to the students is given inthe following forms:

Students are also exposed to reputednational laboratories.

Moreover, the students get supportservices from different sections ofthe college such as the College Library,Computer Center, Hostel,  Scholarshipetc.

Achievementsof the Students

 The students of the department havebeen doing wellsince inception in national and state-level tests such as JAM,NET, GATE, SET,CAT, CTET, TET, etc.  65students qualified JAM, NET, GATE, SET, CAT,CTET, TET etc during 2018-23.

A good number of students are engagedin research in Indian Institutesand Universities.

HealthyPractices

There is a very good cordial relationbetween the students and teachersin the department.

One wall magazine is published annuallyby the students.

Students celebrate teachers day,Rakhi Bandhan festival, farewell andfresher welcome programme.

In almost every years, departmentarranged educational tour for allstudents & teachers with minimum cost.
